Show Us Your
Place in the Pattern on Friday, June 11!
Nineteen years ago (ugh!) the powers that be at Byerly Hall
sat down to put together the Harvard-Radcliffe Class of ’89 much in the same
way that a kaleidoscope craftsman assembles that intriguing instrument which is
part art, part toy. We were not unlike
those loose bits of colored glass of
various shapes and sizes, all interesting enough in their own right, which are
thrown together for the ways in which they will complement and contrast with
each other as they catch the light in endless combinations, shifting and moving
over time. In our years at Harvard our
class, with its varied talents, certainly created many colorful, interesting,
and beautiful patterns in every imaginable form of creative expression, from
the visual and performing arts to literature, philosophy, and scientific theory.
Today as members of the Class of ’89, we are sharing our
creativity with the world. If we stop to
take even a quick peep through the aperture of our kaleidoscope now, we can see
that, taken in total, the creative accomplishments of our class are even more
dazzling and provocative than they were when we graduated. The patterns have certainly changed and the
pieces have all shifted as things have been shaken up over the past fifteen
years, but that perpetual change is certainly the key to a kaleidoscope’s
fascination.
On Friday night, June 11, at the reunion-kickoff event, we
invite you to both show us your place in our kaleidoscope of creativity and to
also get a sense of the big picture by viewing a sampling of our classmates’
endeavors. We hope our showcase will
feature many different types of creative accomplishments. We’re planning to
have a book table, a CD/MP3 listening station, and an image gallery at the
event, and a few of our musical classmates will be performing that night. We
want to include your creations, too. If you’ve got it to share, we want you to
share it with the class.
Have you written a book? A computer program?
An oratorio?
Have you designed a website? A city?
A movie set?
Have you built your dream home? A
business? A tree house?
Tell us about it, give us a copy. Send us photos, exhibition
catalogues, videos, graphics, logos, anything that shows us what you’ve been up
to over the past fifteen years. We’re open to suggestions, so surprise us with
your creative approaches to creativity. E-mail your files to Tasha
Vincent at tvincent-89@post.harvard.edu or send books
and CDs via snail mail to
