Afam Onyema shares with us his gift of writing and his extraordinary work in Nigeria:

From the moment I was able to grasp both a pen and the idea of how to use
it, I have loved to write. I wrote extensively throughout my time at
Harvard. It was actually my most prolific period, despite the mountains of
school work with which I had to contend. One of the great thrills of my
life was receiving the $1000 prize in Ebony Magazine's 2004 Gertrude
Williams Short Story Contest (announced in the March 2004 issue).  The
story focused on throny, complicated issues of abandonment, family
obligations, lost chances with loved ones, death, and a new chance at life.
I greatly enjoyed writing the story, and to have my work recognized by
Ebony Magazine was a humbling honor.

While I absolutely love to write, I am more joyful that God has blessed me
with a great purpose in life.  Since I was a young child, it has been my
father’s dream to build a hospital in Nigeria, his homeland.  Moved by his
passion and selflessness, I have taken on this dream as my own.  Together,
we have created a foundation and have put together a dedicated, experienced
team.  We have made such great progress toward accomplishing our goal.  Feel
free to check us out at
www.geanco.org.  I am so excited about this project.
It is an amazing thing to work on.  The whole of the Class of 2001 is
invited to visit the hospital (and learning center and library we will
build along with it), though you might have to wait until our 10th reunion
year to see project in its final stage.  It will be worth the wait, I
assure you!

Chuck Nwokocha (2001, COL) writes, "my brother, Prosper Nwokocha (Columbia, '06) and I have launched a new service -- SwapU.com SwapU is an online classifieds, like Craigslist- but limited to college students who want to connect with other students in order to buy, sell, and swap items. SwapU is a website designed to serve as a link between sellers and buyers within the college community. Its primary objective is to create an easy way for students to buy and sell goods. SwapU will connect students with the common interest of finding and advertising products. In a diverse and dynamic environment, such as a college/university campus, students face the challenge of interacting with each other efficiently in order to enhance their campus lives. If you’re trying to buy, sell, trade goods, or just make money, SwapU is here to make that as easy as possible. With time and resources being limited, students can benefit from a service in which their commerce reaches a wider market, with minimal labor. At SwapU, all students have to do is post items that they are selling or search for the items they want to buy and they will be available to the registered members of the website. Additionally, students have the option to Swap goods. For each item posted, a user may indicate whether he will accept swap offers and may list specific items he is willing to swap for. Although the site is live, SwapU will have its official launch on Thursday, August 14th, 2008. Columbia University is the charter school for SwapU. SwapU is also available at Arizona State University, Harvard University, University of North Texas, University of Texas at Arlington, University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas Women’s University, Texas Tech University, However, Arizona State University will be the flagship. James Pasquariello (2001, COL) writes, "Hi Everyone, I am the founder and Executive Director of Adoption and Foster Care Mentoring. As someone who was personally in foster care and adopted, I know the value of providing a consistent positive adult to foster/adopted children through times of transition. Much research demonstrates that one caring adult often makes the difference--leading to a resilient, successful future, rather than a negative one. Perhaps this was even true for you. If you are in the Boston area, and are interested in building a positive relationship that can make a real difference, please e-mail mentor@afcmentoring.org or call (617) 224-1302. If you have ideas to help us raise needed funds to help more children, please e-mail justinp@afcmentoring.org or call (617) 224-1305. To learn more, please visit www.afcmentoring.org."
